Blackrock Skatepark

I’ve been skateboarding since I was about 12.  Needless to say, it’s a huge part of my life and it makes me look seriously cool.  Yep, believe that.

Talking to a friend a few years ago, he mentioned his cousin works for DLRCoCo in the parks department and that they were planning to build a skatepark in Blackrock park.  I began combing over DLR’s website and soon after, they released their draft masterplan for the park where they mentioned they’ll be building a skatepark at the old circus ground, which has been neglected over the years.

And then Covid happened.  I suddenly had a lot of spare time and needed to keep up on top of graphic-y things, so I started throwing around some designs on paper and later in C4D.  It seemed easy at first, but nope, there’s a lot to bear in mind.  That all ended up snowballing and I’ve since set up a website – https://blackrockskatepark.com/ –  and Instagram account to go with it – https://www.instagram.com/blackrockskatepark/– trying to keep the park on track and NOT have some pre-build ramps come over on a ship from a factory.  Planning and construction processes move at a glacial pace, so what you’re looking at here is a bunch of concept plans to show what could work, or could not not.

The idea is to have a skatepark, pump track, bouldering wall and callisthenics bars installed in the park, which would be a hugely successful amenity for the city.  So yeah, I’m getting involved and absolutely stuck in with this one.

I’ve tried to use real-world skatespots and parks as inspiration for many of the obstacles here – in the v4 concept plan, it’s based on Baggot St Bank of Ireland plaza, which I went and measured to get the dimensions of the walls right.  BTW, Baggot was one of the world’s best skate plazas until 2003 when the powers that be at BoI had the immense foresight to spend close to €500k on skatestoppers.  Something which would’ve gone a long way to putting an international standard skatepark in place, but nope, funding a skatepark would tank their share price, right?

Anyway, this is in the works and it’s something else for me to work on in the coming years.
